# Engineering Manual 08: Production Engineering & Operational Hardening

## 1. Bridging the Notebook-to-Production Gap
Prototypes developed in Jupyter notebooks rely on synchronous in-memory loops, unindexed local files, and hardcoded credentials. Transitioning to resilient enterprise production requires:
- **Asynchronous Non-Blocking Workers:** Decoupling ingestion and embedding pipelines using message queues (e.g. BullMQ, Celery, Kafka).
- **Connection Pooling & Circuit Breakers:** Protecting downstream vector databases and LLM endpoints with automatic retries and exponential backoff.
- **Stateless Horizontal Scaling:** Deploying containerized microservices behind load balancers with healthchecks and Prometheus metrics.

---

## 2. Zero-Downtime Index Operations
- **Change Data Capture (CDC):** Streaming transactional updates from relational primary stores to vector indices to eliminate data drift.
- **Blue-Green Vector Reindexing:** Creating shadow vector indices during embedding model upgrades and atomically switching routing aliases upon full qualification.
